Liverpool breathed fresh life into the English Premier League title race on Saturday after coming from a goal down to complete a 4-1 defeat of Manchester United in front of an incredulous crowd at Old Trafford.
Knowing a victory would effectively wrap up a third straight title, United looked to be in command when Cristiano Ronaldo scored on an early penalty kick.
But a rare mistake by United defender Nemanja Vidic, whose miserable afternoon ended with a straight red card in the 75th minute, enabled Fernando Torres to score the equalizer.
A penalty kick by Steven Gerrard gave visiting Liverpool the lead at halftime. Fabio Aurelio’s perfectly placed free kick, after Vidic was ejected for a foul on Gerrard, iced the match for Liverpool.
