RIGA, Latvia (AP) — Jurijs Zigajevs and Maris Verpakovskis scored a goal each Wednesday to help Latvia beat Luxembourg 2-0 in a World Cup qualifying match.
Verpakovskis took advantage of a defensive mistake in the 45th minute and found Zigajevs open in front of the net. Zigajevs quickly connected and beat Luxembourg goalkeeper Joubert Jonathan.
Verpakovskis was credited with the second goal in the 75th after a corner kick found its way through a crowd of players jostling for position in front of the Luxembourg net.
A replay, however, appeared to show that Verpakovskis did not touch the ball.
Latvia's second victory over Luxembourg in a week gave the team six points to keep it close to Group 2 leaders Greece and Switzerland.
